There remains a significant need for foster parents across the state. Children with special health care needs and complex medical issues are better served by parents who are supported by a specialized team. Medical parents are critical team members who receive child-specific training for each child and ongoing support. Our goal is to help recruit traditional foster parents who might be able to assist a medical team, a therapeutic team or perhaps learn they might have an interest in assisting children with disabilities. To assist as a medical or therapeutic provider, one must first be licensed as a foster care parent. Medical foster parent candidates must attend a related pre-service training. Medical foster parents have access to support from a team that includes a registered nurse and social worker working with a medical director. Parents approved to assist the medical teams obtain a Medicaid provider number to be able to receive an additional payment from Medicaid when based on the level of care approved for a medical foster child. These medical parents also have access to on-call medical staff after hours and on weekends or holidays.
